Time travel
OK according to the podcast the producers are saying that Desmond did indeed travel back in time. But didn't they already say that the show was based is real science? As a matter of fact wasn't time travel mentioned and they specifically said there is no time travel? So what's the deal? And now that they've confirmed the time travel, I believe even more certainly that this is how Penny knows to look for Desmond. Desmond told his physicist friend about his life on the island when he went back in time. So when he took missing Penny probably spoke to his friends and found out the info from the physicist, who knew about the button and the electromagnet, and he then could have surmised what Penny should be looking for. Credit goes to back_gammon from the boards that shall not be named for this Penny/Desmond theory. So, what do you guys think are the producers back pedaling?

Ah,shoot, don't tell me time travel.I'd just come to accept that it was all in his mind and now they're going to confuse me with time travel?????? I don't listen to the podcasts, what exactly did they say ?

Damon basically told us that Desmond really did go back in time for that brief period after he turned the key, and that the small changes he made in the timeline may actually have effects that make their way to the present time. He mentioned, for example, that he told the bartender to duck, so the bartender didn't get hit in the head. It's a minor change, I know, but if we somehow see a result of this change in a future episode, that would pretty much confirm it. That small changes bit sounds like an out in case they change things up again later. I'm not complaining though, it's just confusing. Should we listen to what they say or not? :?

Here is a link to the Podcast I haven't listened to it but I have an issue with some of the wording that I'm reading about. They didn't actually say Des time traveled they said he went back in time. Now that may seem the same but it actually isn't. Going back in time means that Des returned to the time that is considered his past but isn't able to change anything because he can't change his future. In time travel, the past can be changed and a different future outcome can be achieved. Time travel runs the risk of paradox because their would actually be 2 Des' in the past. But going back in time avoids this complication and closes the oppertunity for multiple paths. Does anyone follow that?

Hello to all. Hi Blonde. yes I understand what you mean but I think that Des has changed time. I'll try to explain what I mean - ya wanna pull up a seat ? cos you know how long winded I am... I've posted this elsewhere so I'll try to repeat some of it here.. Unless you do and say EXACTLY the same thing when you travel back... things will change (as per the 'butterfly effect') Des did NOT do this. O.k. as far as we know he went to the interview/meeting with Widmore this seemed the same as before. Apart from the beeping/ delivery man/ numbers on the clock but these didn't seem to change his actions or perhaps his words. Comes out of the meeting, throws his tie, sees Charlie...and BING BONG.. goes over and we know how that goes... NOW the important thing here is that he TOLD someone about this... he went to see his friend... he stopped the bartender from getting biffed... he has created his own 'Butterfly Effect' Each of those actions has repercussions.. Yeah but the future is the same, some may point out.. IS IT THOUGH? we don't know this for fact..By changing something as trivial as changing your daily routine you have also, however slightly, changed other peoples lives and events. "No man is an island" this is true, we are all connected. Charlie, for eg, was saved by Jack. After that time Charlie may have unwittingly saved other people from bad decisions.. from losing a limb or life...and in turn those people have stayed around and therefore their presence has altered the dynamics of life on the island.. Course- correcting... maybe true but if that is the case.. why tell Des what he was supposed to do? Regardless of what she said Des would have ended up on that island pushing that button... but she didn't - she was adamant that he had to do what she said and when.. now you can't have it both ways.. that things are pre-ordained and it doesn't matter what you do and then say but in order for that to happen you MUST do this..

But he did change some of his actions, some of the outcomes, for example the bartender. The woman in the store spoke to him about his future... well, if it was a dream I could see her addressing that because he's having the dream. And one other point, which is what really started me on this, time travel and going back in time are still not physically possible right now. The producers did say that things in the show are based on real science and tecnology.

I guess what I was trying to say and didn't do a great job at, is that Des couldn't change the big things. He was going to end up on the Island regardless of what he changed when he went back in time. That future was already written and can't be totally erased. Do you see what I'm saying? PF-I said the same thing about it not being based on real science. But now TPTB are saying via the podcast that he went back in time. I thought it was a true flash before his eyes because he was prepared to die when he turned the key.
