The Quiz Hello Losties!
There is a still some time to sit through until Lost comes back (albeit not long) so I decided to start a quiz!
Now some of these will appear hard, some easy, so you will just have to see how clever you are.
I will ask 2 questions a day.
You will pm me your answers
Two days later I will reveal the answers and give you your score.
The person with the most points by the end of it (the date will be revealed soon) Will win a prize that you can show and laugh at the others with!
So, here we go.
1, What did Feminists do with their bras in 1968?
2, Who was the first American president? :wink:
Lost in Claire- 01-29-2007
First of all I would like to say thanks to the people who took part, and say to others that there is still a chance for you to join in!
Right, on with the results.
1, What did Feminists do with their bras in 1968?
LostNBlonde and Elizpentecost both said "Burned them"
WRONG!
Arguably the most influential feminist pro-*test*-('") in history occurred at the 1968 'Miss America' beauty con-*test*-('"). A group of pro-*test*-('")ers picketed the pageant with signs and banners. They crowned a sheep 'Miss America' and then threw items such as curlers, bras and high heeled shoes into a bin. But they did not burn them. They wanted to, but the police advised against it, as they were standing on wood.
The myth of bra burning started with an article in New York Post.
In 1992 she told a interviewer "I mentioned the planned bra burning, as well as other things, the headline writer took this one step further and called them 'bra burners'.
The headline was enough, journalists seized on this without bothering to read the article, and one of the weirdest urban myths ever.

2, Who was the first American president?
LostNBlonde said "George Washington." She was wrong
Elizpentecost said "John Hanson" She was closer, but also wrong.
The answer was actually Peyton Randolph.
He was the first of 14 pre Washington Presidents of the Continental Congress, or the "United States in Congress Assembled".
This was formed by the 13 conalies to formulate their complaints to the British Crown.
The formal title of “President of the United States, in Congress Assembled” was often shortened to simply “President of the United States”. Prior to the Lee Resolution of independence, the position was simply the President of Congress for the United Colonies of America.
The following men served as the President of the First Continental Congress:
* Peyton Randolph (September 5, 1774 – October 21, 1774) and
* Henry Middleton (October 22, 1774 – October 26, 1774)
The following men served as the President of the Second Continental Congress:
* Peyton Randolph (May 10, 1775 – May 23, 1775)
* John Hancock (May 24, 1775 – October 31, 1777)
* Henry Laurens (November 1, 1777 – December 9, 1778)
* John Jay (December 10, 1778 – September 27, 1779)
* Samuel Huntington (September 28, 1779 – March 1, 1781<1>
The following men served as President of the United States in Congress Assembled:
* Samuel Huntington (March 1, 1781<2> – July 9, 1781)
* Thomas McKean (July 10, 1781 – November 4, 1781)<3>
* John Hanson (November 5, 1781 – November 3, 1782)
So, while elizpentecost was close, both her and LostNBlonde finish today on 0

2. How many states are there in the USA?
Have fun, and answer well, and you could get a prize!
LostNBlonde- 01-31-2007
What's the prize? Is it worth public embarrassment?
Lost in Claire- 01-31-2007
Yes! But telling you the prize would ruin everything!

Hello Quiz Fans
Here the answers for the questions set on Wednesday.
1. After Mosquitoes, which animal is the biggest killer in history? (Not Counting Humans)
This
Apart from Mosquitoes (who have killed half of the humans that have ever died) the Marmot has killed more humans than any other animal.
The Marmot (especially the Bobac variety) are very susceptible to a lung infection called yersinia pestis, more commonly known as the Bubonic Plague.
There have been many outbreaks of the Plague, the most famous being the black death, the estimated death toll of the Bubonic Plague is over a billion, making the Marmot the second deadliest animal ever!

Good thing the American History Teacher got the state question correct huh Lou??!!??
elizpentecost- 02-02-2007
There are 50 states, plus 1 federal district, plus a number of territories that people often forget about, such as Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam.
Washington DC, being a Federal District, is not recognized as a State and isn’t any different than any of the other States (or Commonwealths).
Territories like Puerto Rico (Et Al.) are not American States, they're United States protectorates, Independent Sovereign Countries under US protection (exchanged for the presence of US military bases). They are not governed by US laws, Pay no US taxes and have no Representatives in Congress (but Washington DC does). SO...
A Commonwealth, a State or a Federal District doesn't matter; all have Congressional Representation and are virtually indistinguishable from one another, so there are 51.
Come on! Throw me a bone here! I ACTUALLY researched this one!
:cry:
sigh...Zero it is....

the history teacher Yes, the history teacher knew that one! :nerd: That's the kind of trivia I like to use to make my Honors students crazy, but alas, this year, I have the "Why do we have to learn anything?" students. I'm lucky if they know why there's 50 stars on the flag and what they represent :roll:
So sorry Beth, Alex Trebek wouldn't have given you that one, and Alex is the man!Better luck next week
elizpentecost- 02-02-2007

I'll get it right next time!
I enjoy the hunt!
Bring it on LIC!
