Desmond is named after philosopher David Hume who wrote about the Social Contract. Desmond ended up on the Island when the boat he was racing around the world in crashed. Interestingly, Libby is the person who gave Desmond the boat to sail and Libby just happened to die right before Desmond returned to the island. Anyway, Desmond now appears to have psychic abilities that he hadn't displayed to us before. The thing is though; he could have had them before crashing on the Island. He carries with him a book (Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens) that he stated would be the last book he would ever read. What if he honestly, literally meant that? If we start seeing Desmond read his book, I think his end is near. Why are we just seeing these abilities? Because they were muted by the magnet. Now that the magnet isn't functioning his abilities have returned.

I still don't know what's going on with his 'special ability's', I don't think he has any, just because I don't feel Lost is that kinda show.

I think Des can see things that are going to happen but I don't think it is caused by the island. Like I said, I think the magnet muted these abilities in him and now he has them back. He seemed pleasantly surprised when he realized that Locke hadn't already said the speech he was referring to when talking with Hurley. It was like he recognized what was happening and was glad to have this quirk back.

I thought that the magnet installed the powers in him for the first time. To me it did not seem like he had had them at any time before.

LostNBlonde- 02-04-2007

I actually think Des had his abilities pre-Island and the magnet surpressed them on the Island.

Desmond, Desmond, Desmond. Is there anything you haven't done in life? You were a stage setter, a monk, in the service, a prisoner, almost a doctor, a button pusher, now a soothsayer. When will it end Desmond? And more importantly, when will you tell us what is going on??

Lost in Claire- 06-17-2007

Just thinking, Desmond might feel a lot of guilt next season. If he had not told Charlie about his apparently impending death, would Charlie have shut the door, or would he have ran out and survived? He also might feel guilt when he thinks back about letting Mikhail go after he saved Naomi, if he had killed Mikhail, then he would not have killed Mr Pace. He also might feel more guilt now, after learning that it wasn't Penny's boat, and that he could have endangered the losties. For the whole 3rd season we thought that his gift could be helping the losties, but it could turn out being nothing but bad news...
