1.02 Pilot, Part 2 Days 2-3
Charlie Pace, Kate Austen
We see in flashback that Charlie is a heroin addict and Kate is the prisoner the Marshall was transporting.
Back on the beach, Jack gives the transmitter to Sayid who we find out was a communications officer with the Iraqi Republican Guard. Sayid, Kate, Charlie, Sawyer, Boone, and Shannon go inland attempting to find a signal for the transmitter. They are attacked by a polar bear which Sawyer kills with a gun he found on the Marshall.
The group hear a transmission that has been looping for 16-years. Shannon translates the message as, “I'm alone now, on the island alone. Please someone come. The others, they're, they're dead. It killed them. It killed them all.” Charlie utters the now famous line, “Guys, where are we?”
The mysteries from this episode include:
Why was a polar bear on a tropical island?
Who made the French transmission?
What killed “them all”? Who is the transmission talking about?
Why has the transmission been broadcasting for 16-years?

The survivors are now scavenging the plane for their luggage and other things needed for their survival. And Claire is starting to worry about the condition of her unborn child who may have been affected by the crash. In the jungle, a young survivor name is Walt is searching for his dog that was on the plane. He ends up finding a pair of handcuffs instead. The possibility of a criminal on the plane leads to an immediate assumptions. One survivor named Sawyer is quick to accuse Sayid (who just happens to be Middle Eastern) of being a terrorist and a fight breaks out between them on the beach. Jack, Kate, and Charlie return from their jungle trek in time to help break up the fight. They enlist Sayid's help in getting the transceiver to work. Sayid informs Kate that they need to find a better place in order to get a reception from the transceiver.
And so another jungle trek begins...this time they will have to go into the hills and get a reception before the battery on the radio runs out. Jack is unable to go because he must perform surgery on an unconscious man with a shrapnel in his body. Two siblings Shannon and Boone have an argument which leads Shannon to request joining Sayid and Kate on their hill trek. Boone must join up to keep an eye on Shannon and Charlie joins just for fun. Sawyer watches the five heading into the jungle and he catches up to join them. They climb hills and trek through tall grass but still no reception on the transceiver. Suddenly they hear a noise coming closer and closer. Kate and Charlie have every reason to worry after the fuselage incident. All of them except Sawyer start to run. Instead Sawyer takes out a gun and begins shooting at the creature charging towards him. The creature is shot several times in the head and lies dying before Sawyer. The other five gather around. To their shock and confusion the charging creature happened to be none other than a polar bear. Kate questions Sawyer about where he got the gun. He tells her he got it off the man that Jack is tending to. That man happens to be a Marshall who was escorting the anonymous criminal on the plane.
The six continue their trek and now high up in the mountains they get a signal but Sayid is unable to communicate an S.O.S. because another signal keeps taking over the transceiver. The six start out full of hype believing now that they were going to be rescued, it eventually turns into fear and confusion as the blocking message on the transceiver begins to play over and over and over. With the battery running out, Shannon is asked to translate the repeating looping message which is being spoken in French. The message has a woman's voice repeatedly calling for an S.O.S. But Sayid calculates that the message has been replaying itself... for sixteen years. The six are now more afraid and confused than ever. Perhaps this was no ordinary deserted island after all...

All right, here's some thoughts on the Pilot part 2:
-On the way back from getting the transceiver, Charlie told Kate he was in the restroom on the plane, puking. We know,of course, he was getting his drugs. The he said something about not being very useful and "every trek needs a coward" Very ironic seeing how bravely Charlie met his end in the S3 finale.
-In the Charlie flashback, we saw him go to the restroom up by the cockpit to get his drugs, when the turbulence hit he rushed out to the first empty seat he could find and belted himself in. I assume that was also near the cockpit. So then how did he survive and end up with the rest of our Losties on the beach? It showed all the people belted in their seats near the cockpit as dead, so why wasn't he ?
-Sun ,meek little lamb, buttons up her sweter when Jin chews her out,but later when they are preparing sushi at one point he slaps her hand away. When he walks away with the sushi, she unbuttoned the sweater in a small act of defiance. You go,girl,
-Foreshadowing, Sawyer says to Jack"Whatever you say, Doc, you're the hero."
-The marshall's handcuffs sure fell a long way away from Kate and the marshall, didn't they ?Besides being on Kate,it looked like they were also partly attached to the seat in the flashback, that's why Kate had a hard time getting to the oxygen. But when Walt found them they were neatly fastened together again and not attached to anything.A little continuity mishap ?
-For the 1st time we see Kate in her undies, bathing in the ocean,(down, boys, down) signalling that she's going to be the object of desire on the show, I guess.
-We also heard Boone call Shannon worthless for the first time, sad.
-I still love the little homages to previous films and TV shows. In the 1st part of the Pilot,Locke was Don Corleone in the garden, with the orange rind in his mouth, looking freaky. In this one, Sawyer told Kate"I'm just a complex guy, sweetheart" like Bogey in Casablanca "I'm just a complicated guy sweetheart."
-More foreshadowing,Locke explaining backgammon to Walt doesn't call the pieces white and black, but dark and light. It's also funny to see how young Walt looked then.
-Sawyer shot the charging polar bear with a 9mm,he shot the guy in Sydney,he shot Tom(later) and yet he botched the job shooting the marshall.Maybe euthanasia is tougher than revenge.
-I had a thought listening to Rousseau's looped mesage. She said, "the others, they're dead, it killed them, it killed them all."What if she wasn't referring to the French science team, but to the Others killed in the purge ?I have sometimes wondered if Rousseau has been telling us the truth about her background.
-We saw Walt reading the Spanish comic book with the polar bear in it. Then later in the epi Sawyer kills a polar bear.Supposedly the bears were part of the zoological experiments that went wrong,or were they? What about Walt's "powers" any connection there ?

The marshall's handcuffs sure fell a long way away from Kate and the marshall, didn't they ?
In the Pilot part 1, she is first seen coming out of the jungle. She later on reveals she was awake throughout the crash, so it sounds like she went to the jungle to take the cuffs off. Why didn't she stop to help the rest of the people? Cos shes evil

The cuffs were off before the plane hit the ground. When a suitcase knocked out the marshall, she got the keys out of his pocket and freed herself,so she could reach the oxygen mask. She also put a mask on the marshall.

Just watched the episode again, with the commentary from Damon/JJ/Brian, and noticed something very interesting that Damon (i think it was damon anyway) said:
"At this point they actually still think theyre going to get off the Island... But theyre not, not until Season 4 at the earliest!"
(not an EXACT quote, but darn close anyway)
Just thought it seems pretty fitting that it looks like everyones (or some peoples) rescue comes in season 4 :D ... Sorta makes you wonder... how the heck far ahead did they have all this planned! I mean i know they always had the basics, but actually saying they might get off the Island, that far in advance seems insane, because it means they must have had central plans that run even deeper than we know.
Isnt it interesting that they would pre-hash season 4, within the boundaries of EPISODE 1 (ok 2, but its all one story).

That is actually reassuring that they DO know what they are doing. Because, truth be told, I've had my doubts!!
