1.01 Pilot, Part 1
Days 1-2 Jack Shephard Flight 815 (traveling from Sidney, Australia to Los Angeles, California) crashes on a deserted tropical island. Forty-eight people survive the crash (The Losties) and set up a camp on the beach while they wait for the rescue they believe will come soon. Loud roaring and something large moving near the beach frighten the survivors in the night. Via flashback, we see Jack talking to Rose on the plane after Charlie runs past. Rose tells Jack that her husband, Bernard, is in the restroom. We also see the stewardess give Jack two bottles of liqueur that miraculously also survives the plane crash. Jack, Kate and Charlie go to the cockpit (which is in the jungle, broken off from the fuselage) to retrieve the transceiver. The pilot is still alive and informs the three that the plane wasn’t head to LA and was actually about 1,000 miles off course. They hear a loud noise from outside. The pilot stands and is violently pulled out of the cockpit window by an unseen being. The 3 Losties run and are separated. Kate and Charlie see the mutilated body of the pilot in a tree. Jack safely emerges from the jungle after escaping from the “monster”. The mysteries from this episode include: How did 48-people survive the plane crash with only minor injuries? How did Jack land in the middle of bamboo in the jungle and not bend any of the stalks? Where are they? What caused the noises in the jungle? What killed the pilot? Why was the plane 1,000 miles off course? Where were they headed?

Our journey begins with a doctor name Jack waking up in a jungle in serious pain. He rushes through the jungle and stumbles upon a beach, the site of a terrifying aftermath. The plane which Jack was on has crashed and now amongst the flames and wreckage the survivors are running around panicking and in pain. Once Jack has himself together he quickly rushes to the medical aid of some of the wounded. Jack, however, has his own serious wound to attend to and seeks help from the first person he's able to find, a curly brunette woman named Kate. She is surprised at Jack's ability to stay calm amongst their crisis. The sun is setting over the island as the survivors sit on the beach and look out to the ocean awaiting rescue. Charlie and Sayid are two survivors that go to work on making a signal fire. Jack asks a big guy name Hurley to tend to the very pregnant Claire. As night begins to fall, the survivors huddle in groups around campfires built amongst the dead bodies and wreckage. Some survivors are taking an early rest on the sand while others feast on the airplane food they were able to salvage from the crash. Sayid is worried because of the long time it is taking for rescue to come. Jack is tending to a survivor in critical condition... the very survivor that Kate was sitting next to on the plane. To the shock and curiosity of the survivors a sudden roar is heard in the jungle and everyone turns toward the trees to find its sources. Our main characters take a few steps closer to the jungle and witness the wild swaying and knocking down of trees. The next morning, Jack and Kate plan to trek into the jungle to find the fuselage which broke off from the plane in mid-flight. The fuselage will contain a transmitter radio that the survivors can use to call for rescue. Charlie, the former bass player of the band Driveshaft volunteers to come along. Deep into their jungle trek it starts to rain hard. At the beach the survivors (save one) begin to seek shelter under the wreckage from the pouring rain. They hear the roars coming from the jungle again. Still in the rainstorm the jungle trio has found the fuselage. They find nothing but dead people as they reach the cockpit. One dead pilot falls out as Jack opens the cockpit door. The other is still belted to his seat, but then it is discovered that this pilot is actually alive as he regains consciousness. In the cockpit the pilot asks Jack for information on what has happened. Jack gives the final headcount on the crash survivors which is 48. The pilot explains that the radio went out six hours into the flight and that the plane was going to turn around and make an emergency landing in Fiji. This however caused the plane to off course by at least 1000 miles sending the rescuers looking for them in the wrong place. Suddenly the fuselage begins to rock as the mysterious roar is heard. The pilot decides to crawl out through the cockpit window to investigate only to be immediately taken by the strange noise. As soon as the blood begins to splatter Jack, Kate, and Charlie rush out of the fuselage (the transceiver now in their hands) and begin running for their lives. Eventually during their run, everyone is separated but find each other again after the rain stops. The mysterious jungle being is no longer present. The trio looks up to find the bloody corpse of the pilot hanging in the trees...

There has been much talk over The Big Clue that was apparently missed by almost everyone in this opening epi. Any clues? I have read in a thread on the ABC boards that someone had thought that:- .....Jack was 'doing a Des'. He woke up checked his pocket for the alcohol that he had put in there that he knew he would need for his side to be stitched cleanly. He seemed to know where and when the next danger was coming from and was trying to save everybody. Was wondering if anyone had any ideas on this? It certainly does look strange that he shoved the extra bottle in his pocket unless he thought he would need it on the way to the cemetary ( he was going straight there to bury his Dad). And Jack Did Say To Rose: "I'll Stay With You Until Your Husband Comes Back" Maybe He Ment Back From The Other Side Of The Island With The Tailies, And Not From The Bathroom. 8) Just a Thought.

I like this theory, it would be a big secret to let out so late on! I think the only thing that makes it fall down is the fact he is a doctor and has saved so many people on the island. The whole "course correction" thing would be in meltdown! I still think of this episode (as well as the 2nd part) as my favourite, it symbolises everything good about Lost and is the best start to a show I have ever seen!

Yeah... is one of those seemed like a good idea at the time kinda things... :( Just had someone say - that the only trouble with having Jack as the missing clue is that he was s'posed to die this epi....hmm.. valid point.. but hey ho - the king is dead...long live the king ....have moved onto a Charlie point now. Charlie moves further up the plane, gets saved numerous times from disaster... is he being saved for that one moment where he can save Claire and the baby?

Lost in Claire- 05-28-2007

I watched this episode last night, and noticed little things.. Kate says "I saw some smoke, up the valley" in a conversation with Jack, and very quickly after, they hear the monster for the first time. Did Kate see the monster without knowing it? I also noticed that by going to the toilet, and running into Jack, Charlie may of saved Jack's life. Jack is about to stand up and go to the toilet, when Charlie runs into and past him, making Jack sit down, just as the first big rumble starts.. We also see Boone trying his phone, but getting no signal. This might be because of Danielle's signal, and the Looking Glass jamming it. If they still have it, it may work now (not that they need it)

The missing clue... Maybe the whole epi is the clue. We thought we were watching a real time accident in 2004, but maybe we were watching a flashback. That would fit in with the flash forward that we saw at the end of the Season 3 finale. I'm still bugged about Jack lying in the bamboo with none of them broken down from his fall, and the liquor bottles in his pocket not broken, are they plastic or glass on the planes (I'm not a drinker when I fly,so I don't know) The fact that Jack was off by himself, is that symbolic of what's to come ,that Jack will often feel outside the group,so to speak ? When Jack reached the beach in short order he saved Claire,Rose,Hurley, the guy that was trapped under the wreckage and the marshall, everyone else just seemed to be mindlessly running amok. Shannon standing there screaming ,boy did I have the urge to just slap her out of it. Charlie wrote FATE on his finger bandages, was that the missing clue for us ? The monster, smokie, whatever you want to call it. When they heard it the 1st night,it was making noise and stomping down trees, but didn't hurt anyone. Rousseau later said it was a security system. That first night was it simply trying to frighten them off?Obviously it could have killed them then. It didn't get deadly until the next day when they went after the cockpit. did it kill the pilot because they were coming closer to Other territiory,or does smokie have its own agenda ? The noise- sort of a weird combo of growling, and sounds like metal grinding and groaning along with a machine like sound.Rose said it sounded familiar to her. She's from the Bronx, could it have sounded to her like subway or Ell cars ? When Charlie was tealking to Kate about Driveshaft, he said "...see the ring?" Did they name the band Driveshaft because of the initials D.S. of their ancestor mentioned in the season finale? That damn dog! No I don't think he's part of a conspiracy or possessed or anything too weird, but the dog bugs me too.Vincent watching Jack, and then watching Jack,Kate and Charlie the next day seems out of character for a Lab. Having owned 4 Labs in my lifetime, I know that they are very gregarious and people loving dogs.Yes, I'm sure he was shook up and confused by the crash, and maybe the island's vibes were bothering him,the way animals and birds can tell when an earthquake is coming, but it just seems to be too strange for Vincent to watching everyone from the tall grass and not making a sound or coming out until Locke makes his magic whistle. OK, those of you anticipating Lost withdrawal symptoms,I've thrown down the gauntlet. We want to keep the board going until Feb. so please jump in. Later this week I'll watch the 2nd part of the Pilot, after I'm done checking finals.

The noise- sort of a weird combo of growling, and sounds like metal grinding and groaning along with a machine like sound.Rose said it sounded familiar to her. She's from the Bronx, could it have sounded to her like subway or Ell cars ? I like the thoery that it was all a flashback, would really give the episode double meaning. About the noises of the monster, lostpedia says: " Rose remarked that the sounds were familiar to her, a sound that was commented by the directors to be similar to noises heard in Bronx, NY. The sound could be, or is very similar to the sound of a receipt being printing in a NYC Taxi Cab or possibly Subway rail cars. In the voiceover commentary for the "The 23rd Psalm" on the Season Two DVD, producer Bryan Burk confirms that the Monster's sound effect is indeed the receipt printer from a NYC taxicab." So it looks like it was an in joke with the cast and crew.. The FATE on Charlies fingers could have been a clue, but I don't know how long the writers plan a death in advance, Great post lou!

Damo- 06-05-2007

I only saw the first part of the pilot for the first time 2 nights ago...lol and the very first thing I spotted tied so well with the season 3 finale. It wasnt the reflection that was in Jacks eye,but the first thing he pulls out of his pocket was a bottle of vodka from the minibar and the strange look and his hand shaking when holding it, just like an ex alcoholic I thought it might have something to do with his old man but now I`m not so sure... Any thoughts Quick link to the pilot epi.. It all happens in the first 3-4 mins http://www.tv-links.co.uk/link.do/1/53/115/1574/2807

Lost in Claire- 06-05-2007

It may have been something boring like shock, but maybe he had the drinking problem we see in the S3 finale before he was on the island? How did you like the episode Damo?

Damo- 06-05-2007

Ya I found it pretty good but I thought that the first part of the pilot was about them boarding the plane and seeing the crash onboard....Maybe I fell asleep before the end, I watched it late

Lost in Claire- 06-05-2007

I remember watching with a friend, knowing there was a plane crash, want to see it fall into the ground, and feeling disapointed when we didn't.

LostNBlonde- 06-08-2007

First off, I remember having the discussion about the "thing missed" in the Pilot with a group of people. No one was able to find any place that this was actually said by TPTB. It appears to be an urban legend. Until someone can show where this was said I think we didn't miss any big clue. Lou, you caught a lot of the same things I did. I will just add a couple quick thoughts: -Charlie may have saved Jack but Jack also saved Charlie. So that makes Jack saving Claire, Hurley, Rose, and Charlie all in the 1st epi. -Jack tells his infamous "5-second" story. While he was telling it, I noticed that his "5" tattoo was clearly visible. I think that is the meaning to that tattoo. -Jack points out that Kate isn't running now. From the beginning they had this runaway characteristic set for Kate. -Did Jack actually see the Monster but lie about it? He said it was right behind him but he jumped into some bushes and didn't see it. Who wouldn't look??? I think he not only saw Smokey but was also scanned.

lou'slost- 06-08-2007

Jack being scanned by smokie, now there's an interesting thought. Maybe that's how smokie would know to produce the Chrisitan doppelganger ?
